As Castro aged, his health declined. He became unable to continue his power in Cuba. At first, he temporarily stepped down as president of Cuba placing his brother Raul the leader. Soon he gave up his power completely. By 2008, his brother had been elected the new president of Cuba. Raul maintains communism in Cuba today.
Even though he is not in power anymore, he still maintains much power within and outside of Cuba. He meets with foreign leaders as they come to Cuba. His brother may be the new leader; however, Castro is still the main figure known by the world. In 2012, he met with Pope Benedict to discuss more religious freedom for Catholics in Cuba.
Fidel Castro will have a lasting effect on Cuba even after he has died.
