Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 in Biran, Cuba. He was the third out of six children born to Lina Ruz Gonzalez and Angel Castro. Fidel's mother was the mistress to his father until Fidel was 15 years old. Until that time, Fidel's father was married to Maria Luisa Argota. Lina Gonzalez was the maid of Maria Argota. When Fidel's parents wed, Fidel was formally recognized as being his father's son two years later. This changing his name from Fidel Alejandro Ruz to Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz.
Political Life
University of Havana in 1930
Fidel Castro attended the University of Havana in 1945 for law school. During his time here, he first became interested in politics. When in grade school, he was only interested in sports. However, while attending the University of Havana, he became immersed in nationalism, anti-imperialism, and socialism. Ironically, during this time of his schooling, he joined an anti-communist group in order to fight against the "corrupt" government in Cuba. He hoped to reform.
